Broken Time is the second full-length album from Jonathan Curtis and the Eclectic Band. It features six original tracks, all of which were recorded live as an ensemble over two days in December 2018. The tracks were recorded as a quartet, but feature six musicians in rotation across the two sessions.
The album takes a jazzier turn from the 2014 release 'Carousel', staying more true to the contemporary jazz form and featuring simpler arrangements to allow for more space and improvisation. The First and Second movements of Isotope explore the concepts of broken time (a jazz drumming philosophy) and minimalist themes. The outlier Dreamfield departs the post-bop setting and takes a more folk-based approach, providing a contrast to the rest of the album's tracks.
Two tunes, Lighthouse and Yellow Lines, were written by bassist Marcus Cain, and provide a gentle balance to the compositional styles of drummer Jonathan Curtis.
In tune with the rest of Curtis' releases, the album was recorded as a band, live and in the same room, with a minimal of post production afterwards. This maintains the raw and organic nature of the performances, warts and all. What you hear on the album is what the musicians played on the day, capturing the essence of jazz collaboration.
